Nigerian Army Captures IPOB Commander ‘Gentle De Yahoo’ with Arms Cache

The Nigerian Army says it has captured Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, better known as Gentle De Yahoo, a commander linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). Troops from the 34 Artillery Brigade and other security agencies moved into Aku-Ihube in Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State, and found his hideout, making the arrest. The operation included surveys of arms and illicit items, which authorities say they recovered at the scene.

Weapons, Workshops, and Other Recoveries

Troops seized an English pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, plus 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO rounds. Also found: a cartridge, six mobile phones, military and police uniforms, and even a German flag. Investigators uncovered a workshop used for dismantling stolen vehicles for resale. They destroyed 10 motorcycles, they say, which were part of his operations.

Wider Military Action and Rescue of Kidnap Victims

Beyond Imo State, coordinated missions in Adamawa, Katsina, and Kogi states rescued a number of kidnap victims. In Madagali (Adamawa), five persons were freed. In Malumfashi (Katsina), five more, and two in Lokoja (Kogi) also regained freedom. Authorities describe these as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal and militant networks.

Public Reaction: Jubilation and Skepticism

News of the arrest sparked joy among many Nigerians, especially in the southeast. People celebrated what they see as a victory over insecurity. However, some voices called for proof: screenshots, photos, or official statements, to verify that Gentle De Yahoo really got captured. Fact-check accounts flagged certain reports as unverified, urging the public to wait for confirmation from official military or government sources.

Implications: Security, Public Trust, and Separatist Conflict

If confirmed, this arrest could mark a significant blow against IPOB/ESN operations in Imo State. It might also embolden security forces in other states where the group reportedly operates. For local communities, the seizure of arms and dismantling of criminal logistics could reduce violence and kidnappings. Moreover, it could improve public trust in the military if authorities transparently show proof of the arrest and follow through with justice. On the other hand, if claims cannot be substantiated, rumors or false reports could erode trust and inflame tensions.

What to Watch Next

Expect the military or government to publish evidence: photos, vehicle or arms inventories, possibly a video. Also, IPOB or its supporters may respond with denials or contradictory claims. Local media will likely monitor whether prosecutors press charges and whether detainees previously harmed or forced into criminal activity can come forward. Meanwhile, community leaders, civil society, and human rights groups will want oversight, especially regarding treatment of captives, due process, and transparency.
