Nigerian Army Plans Aviation Expansion
The Nigerian Army announced plans to expand its aviation wing. The move strengthened its operational capabilities.
Additionally, the Nigerian Army sought opportunities to train its pilots in South Africa. Officials aimed to leverage the advanced facilities of the South African Army.
Shaibu Details Aviation Importance
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, chief of army staff, stressed the value of the project. “The issue of Nigerian Army aviation is very important to us,” he said. “Of course we are fully aware that the South African Army has a very good aviation establishment.”
He continued that the army built its capabilities. “Currently we are building our Army aviation and would like to leverage opportunities available to train our pilots in South Africa,” Shaibu stated.
Growth Projected to Increase Exponentially
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu projected rapid progress. “Nigerian Army aviation will start to grow exponentially in the next few years and we are leveraging that,” he added.
The discussions also covered training for medical personnel. The two sides explored options in forensic pathology and critical trauma care.
Partnership Strengthens Bilateral Ties
Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, chief of the South African Army, welcomed the initiative. He said the visit enhanced the strategic relationship between the two forces.
The announcement aligned with earlier modernisation statements. The Nigerian Army continued efforts to improve its air support for ground operations. Officials planned further engagements. They aimed to finalise the training programmes soon.
