‘NSA, Defence Minister Were in UK Sipping Tea While Bombs Went Off in Maiduguri’ — Rhodes-Vivour

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos, has criticised the federal government’s handling of security, describing it as insensitive.

He made the remark on Friday while speaking on Arise TV’s morning programme.

Rhodes-Vivour faulted the presence of top security officials in the United Kingdom, saying they travelled at a time a bomb explosion occurred in Maiduguri, Borno state.

“In relation to the trip to England, the thing that jumps out at me is how the NSA and the defence boss were in England, sipping coffee, sipping tea, while bombs were going off in Maiduguri. I cannot reconcile that,” he said.

The Lagos ADC chieftain described the situation as “insensitivity and carelessness” by the government.

“I cannot reconcile the insensitivity and the carelessness of this government,” he added.

Rhodes-Vivour also compared the situation with past criticisms of previous administrations, noting that the current reality contradicts earlier promises of improved security.

Furthermore, Rhodes-Vivour questioned the value of the government’s international engagements. He said such trips must deliver tangible benefits for Nigerians.

While acknowledging the importance of international trade, he urged the government to prioritise local development.

“It’s not just about bringing money. What is the development impact on your country?” he said.

He also raised concerns about agreements that may not favour Nigeria’s long-term interests.

According to him, the government needs a clearer vision for productivity and industrial growth. He cited sectors such as steel manufacturing.

The ADC stalwart added that development should go beyond headline announcements. He said sustainable progress requires deliberate planning and leadership.
