Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reminded President Bola Tinubu of his 2022 campaign promise on electricity supply.
Tinubu had said Nigerians should not vote for him for a second term if he failed to provide steady power within his first four years in office.
Obi made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday.
Grid Collapses Raise Fresh Concerns
Obi said the current state of electricity supply contradicts the president’s promise. He noted that the national grid has collapsed twice in January 2026 alone.
According to him, the grid collapsed about 12 times in 2025. He said the repeated failures should worry every patriotic Nigerian.
Obi Questions Tinubu’s Foreign Trips
The former Anambra governor also criticised Tinubu’s foreign travels. His comments came as the president embarked on a state visit to Türkiye.
Obi compared Nigeria’s power situation with that of Türkiye. He said the country, with a population of about 87 million people, generates over 120,000 megawatts of electricity.
Nigeria, he said, struggles to generate less than five per cent of that capacity.
Call for Focus on Domestic Challenges
Obi urged the president to focus more on addressing Nigeria’s internal problems. He warned that critical national issues remain unresolved.
The former presidential candidate said Nigerians may continue to witness foreign trips while governance challenges persist at home.
Obi Urges Accountability Over Politics
Obi criticised what he described as an obsession with the next election. He said Nigerians should place greater emphasis on demanding good governance.
He called on citizens to hold leaders accountable. According to him, this is necessary to end the hardship caused by persistent poor governance.
