The Obidient Movement has called for a nationwide protest and demanded the immediate resignation of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan.

In a statement posted on X on Thursday, Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the movement, said the protest, tagged #OccupyINEC, will begin across the country.

The call follows INEC’s decision to withdraw recognition of the David Mark-led national working committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) pending the outcome of court cases.

Tanko said recent developments have raised doubts about the credibility and neutrality of the electoral body.

“There are moments in the life of a nation when silence becomes dangerous and inaction becomes complicity. Nigeria has arrived at such a moment,” he said.

He added that the commission is increasingly being perceived as compromised.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission, which should stand as an impartial guardian of the people’s will, is increasingly perceived as compromised,” he said.

The movement demanded the resignation of the INEC chairman, alleging abuse of office and loss of public trust.

It also called for an end to what it described as political persecution and intimidation of opposition figures.

The group urged authorities to respect party autonomy and protect Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

“In defence of these principles, we are commencing a nationwide peaceful protest,” the statement read.

Tanko said protesters in Abuja will converge at the ADC national headquarters before proceeding to the INEC headquarters.

He called on Nigerians to participate in a peaceful and coordinated manner.

“This moment goes beyond party lines. It is about the survival of democratic values,” he said.

The movement insisted it would remain peaceful but resolute in its demand for electoral integrity.

“Nigeria must not become a one-party state. We will stand until what is right is done,” he added.
