Ondo moves to develop Araromi beach resort into a major tourism hub

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has unveiled plans to transform the Araromi beach resort into a major tourism hub, signaling a new push to unlock Ondo State’s coastal economic potential.

Araromi Beach Set for Major Upgrade

The project, announced during the Araromi seaside carnival in Ilaje Local Government Area, will see the development of a state-owned beach resort designed to attract both local and international tourists. The governor revealed that the government is targeting between five and ten private investors to partner in transforming the coastline into a vibrant leisure destination.

Stretching about 72 kilometres, the Araromi beach is one of the longest in Africa but has remained largely underutilised. To change this, the state has completed land measurements and architectural designs, with construction expected to begin later this year and the resort projected to be operational within 12 months.

Early signs of investor interest are already visible, with private operators introducing basic facilities such as shelters and mobile kitchens to improve visitor experience.

Investment, Jobs, and Economic Growth

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to position Ondo as a competitive tourism and investment destination. The government has assured potential investors of strong security, improved infrastructure, and accessibility, including the strategic advantage of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, which is expected to boost connectivity to the beach corridor.

Stakeholders say the project could significantly boost tourism, create jobs, and stimulate local businesses, especially in hospitality and transportation. Plans are also underway to include modern facilities such as chalets and reception halls to meet global tourism standards.

If successfully delivered, the Araromi beach resort could become one of Nigeria’s leading coastal destinations—helping diversify the state’s economy while attracting both domestic and foreign investment.
