Osun NULGE Workers to Resume January 5 After 11-Month Strike

The Osun State chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has directed its members to resume work on January 5, 2026, ending an 11-month strike across the state.

The decision was announced in a statement signed on Monday by the union’s President, Dr Nathaniel Ogungbangbe.

Decision follows security consultations

According to the union, the decision followed a series of security council meetings held to assess guarantees for a safe resumption of duties at the grassroots level.

Local government secretariats across Osun have remained shut since February 17, when NULGE ordered workers to withdraw their services.

Strike linked to political tensions

NULGE said the strike was prompted by security concerns arising from a leadership tussle over local government control. The dispute involved chairmen elected during the October 15, 2022 local government elections and rival political interests.

The union said the volatile situation forced workers to vacate council secretariats to protect their lives.

Union demands security deployment

Ogungbangbe said NULGE has formally requested the deployment of adequate security personnel to all 30 local government councils, area offices, and LCDAs ahead of the resumption.

He stressed that the measure is necessary to prevent intimidation, harassment, or violence against workers.

Tenure dispute highlighted

The union also raised concerns over the tenure of some council officials. It said sacked APC chairmen admitted before the Supreme Court that their three-year tenure expired on October 30, 2025.

According to NULGE, the officials are currently seeking tenure extension at the Federal High Court in Osogbo, which it described as unlawful occupation of council offices.

Councils can function without chairmen

NULGE maintained that local governments can function without elected chairmen. It said the Head of Local Administration, supported by directors of administration and finance, can manage council affairs.

The union noted that this arrangement aligns with the Osun State Local Government Accounts Administration Law, 2025.

Union issues warning

The union warned that authorities would bear responsibility for any breakdown of law and order if security agencies fail to act. It said its communication should serve as proof that it alerted relevant agencies in advance.

NULGE urged security agencies to remain neutral and uphold the rule of law while protecting public servants.
