Dr Esther Okunola, Chairperson of Irewole Local Government, announced the death of Oba Olatunde Falabi on Monday. Sources close to the palace revealed that the monarch died after a brief illness over the weekend.
Oba Falabi passed away on February 28, 2026. He had celebrated his 91st birthday in January 2026.
Local Government Mourned
Dr Okunola expressed deep sorrow in her statement. She described the monarch’s passing as the “fall of a great elephant.”
She added that Ikire and the entire Irewole Local Government lost a royal father whose wisdom, courage and guidance served as pillars of unity and progress.
Moreover Dr Okunola noted that Oba Falabi’s reign marked peace, cultural preservation and commitment to Ikire’s development. She stated, “His leadership strengthened traditional institutions and fostered harmony among his people.”
Family Confirmed
Prince Olugbenga Falabi, son of the monarch and immediate past national secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, confirmed the death to media outlets. Moreover he informed that the circumstances surrounding the death remained private.
Reign Highlighted
Oba Falabi, a pharmacist, ascended the throne in May 1993. He reigned for over three decades. During his rule, Ikire experienced economic and political growth. The town hosted the College of Humanities of Osun State University. Additionally, Benedict Alabi, an indigene of Ikire, became Deputy Governor of Osun State.
Legacy Remembered
Dr Okunola extended condolences to the royal family, the Akire Traditional Council and the people of Ikire.
She prayed for eternal rest for the monarch.Furthermore, she declared, “Indeed, when a mighty elephant falls, the forest trembles. Kabiyesi lived a life of honour and service. His legacy will continue to inspire generations.” The community prepared for burial rites amid widespread mourning.
