The Sokoto State Government has faced backlash over allegations that it distributed garri, kuli kuli and a sachet of water as Ramadan relief items despite reportedly budgeting ₦1 billion for the programme.
The controversy began after a post on X by a user identified as Mallam Jabir went viral. He alleged that the state government allocated ₦1 billion for Ramadan palliatives for residents.
Viral Post Sparks Comparison
In his post, Jabir wrote: “Ramadan feeding programme in Sokoto. The Sokoto state government budgeted 1 billion naira for the programme.”

Subsequently, he shared another post comparing what he described as palliatives distributed in the north with packages allegedly given in the south.
In a video attached to the post, a woman unboxed a carton labelled with President Bola Tinubu’s picture and the infinity insignia associated with his campaign. The bo contained a litre of King’s vegetable oil, rolls of Cowbell milk and chocolate drink, sugar, salt, rice, and six packs of macaroni and spaghetti, among other groceries.
Jabir captioned the video: “Northern vs Southern APC Ramadan palliative. The contrast in these Ramadan packages is hard to ignore.”
Netizens React
Following the posts, social media users expressed outrage.
An X user known as OurFavOnlineDoc criticised the alleged distribution. He questioned how ₦1 billion could produce what he described as meagre items.
“Please look at these pictures. This is the government-funded Ramadan feeding programme in Sokoto. Sokoto state government claims they budgeted 1 billion naira for what you’re seeing here,” he wrote.

Similarly, another influencer, Sir Dickson, weighed in. He argued that religious observance does not automatically translate to compassion.
“Even in Ramadan, they are stone cold hearted. Religion is performative. If there is no love in you, religion won’t fix it,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Sokoto State Government has yet to issue an official response to the allegations or clarify the details surrounding the ₦1 billion Ramadan budget.
