PDP Defections Top Agenda as NWC Begins Stakeholder Meetings

The Peoples Democratic Party will meet key stakeholders this week as the Turaki-led National Working Committee moves to curb PDP defections and resolve internal disputes.

A member of the NWC said the discussions aim to stabilise the party. He noted rising tension and growing rivalry within the PDP.

NWC Schedules Meetings Across Leadership Blocs

National Organising Secretary, Theophilus Shan, confirmed that the NWC has lined up talks with state chairmen, lawmakers, former governors, and ex-ministers. PDP governors supported the November 16 Ibadan convention that produced Turaki and his team. However, disagreement continues.

Meanwhile, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his allies insist they still hold key leadership positions. His faction recently announced a 60-day caretaker committee, adding fresh uncertainty.

PDP Defections and Unity to Dominate Discussions

The schedule shows the first meeting taking place on Wednesday with state chairmen and House members. The NWC will also present a Certificate of Return to Ekiti candidate Dr Oluwole Oluyede.

Talks with former governors and ex-ministers are slated for December 16. PDP senators will meet the committee the next day.

A source said Turaki hopes to reassure members, discourage PDP defections, and outline a path to rebuild the party after the disputed convention.

Absences Highlight Ongoing Rift

Some lawmakers say they were not invited. Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda and South-East caucus leader Idu Igariwey claim they received no notice of the meeting.

However, caucus leader Fred Agbedi confirmed he will attend. He said preparation began last week.

The PDP remains divided between factions led by Governor Bala Mohammed and Nyesom Wike. Court rulings and the disputed Ibadan convention intensified the crisis.

Police have sealed the PDP national secretariat to prevent unrest. Key officials were unavailable for comment at press time.
