The Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria warned it will hold a nationwide protest on November 24 if the government fails to release unpaid pension arrears.
National Chairman Mukaila Ogunbote made this announcement during a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday.
Arrears Details and Planned Protest
Ogunbote, also chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NIPOST Chapter), said retirees are owed N32,000 in pension increment arrears and N25,000 in palliative allowances approved since 2023.
Furthermore, he stated that pensioners living abroad will join the protest from their countries, making it a global demonstration.
Appeal to President Tinubu
The coalition called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene. It urged the Minister of Finance and the Accountant-General of the Federation to release the funds immediately.
Ogunbote highlighted the hardship retirees face. “Many pensioners have died, and more are suffering. They struggle to eat properly and access medical care,” he said.
Government Delays Increase Frustration
The coalition said the government promised to pay arrears within two weeks of approval, but it has not acted. Consequently, retirees feel ignored and frustrated nationwide.
Conclusion
The upcoming protest underscores pensioners’ growing frustration over unpaid benefits. They demand urgent action and accountability. The November 24 demonstration serves as a strong call for respect of retirees’ rights and fair treatment.
