Pipeline Vandalism Cuts Power on National Grid — NISO

Electricity generation on Nigeria’s national grid has declined following gas pipeline vandalism, according to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

The system operator confirmed the development in a statement released on Tuesday, linking the power drop directly to disruptions in gas supply to major power plants.

Gas Pipeline Vandalism Disrupts Power Generation

NISO explained that the incident occurred within the upstream gas supply network.

As a result, gas supply to several power generation facilities dropped sharply.

This disruption affected multiple gas-fired power stations, forcing them to operate below capacity. Consequently, overall electricity generation on the national grid declined.

NISO stressed that gas pipeline vandalism remains a major threat to stable power supply in Nigeria.

Emergency Measures Activated to Stabilise Grid

Following the gas pipeline vandalism incident, NISO said it immediately activated contingency measures to protect grid stability.

These actions included increased power dispatch from available hydroelectric stations across the country. In addition, the operator carried out continuous generation re-dispatch to balance supply and demand.

NISO also implemented voltage control measures to prevent system collapse and ensure steady electricity flow.

NISO Monitors Impact of Gas Pipeline Vandalism

The system operator said it is closely monitoring grid conditions nationwide.

According to NISO, officials are tracking system frequency and voltage levels in real time to limit further disruptions caused by gas pipeline vandalism.

The operator added that it is working with key stakeholders across the power and gas sectors to restore normal supply as quickly as possible.

Power Supply Risks Ahead of Festive Season

NISO warned that the incident highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s gas supply chain.

The operator noted that the festive season often places additional pressure on the national grid. Therefore, any disruption linked to gas pipeline vandalism poses a serious risk during this period.

Assurance to Electricity Consumers

Despite the setback, NISO reassured electricity consumers of its commitment to stable power supply.

The operator said it will continue proactive grid management and apply strict operational standards to protect lives, property, and economic activities.

NISO reaffirmed that addressing gas pipeline vandalism remains critical to achieving long-term energy security in Nigeria.
