The Delta State Police Command has ordered a full investigation into an alleged festival in Ozoro community where men reportedly assaulted women.
The directive followed a viral video showing women crying for help as groups of men harassed and attacked them in public.
An X user, identified as Teniola, alleged that several girls were raped and molested during what was described as a “rape festival”.
In the video, men dragged an unidentified girl and tore her clothes in what appeared to be an attempt to sexually assault her.
A voice in the footage warned women to stay indoors during the festival. It added that anyone who came outside would be attacked.
Unverified reports also claim that the event allows only men to move freely in public spaces. They alleged that men will assault any woman found outside.
Reacting on Friday, Bright Edafe, spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, condemned the incident.
He described it as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing”.
The force spokesperson said the state commissioner of police, Aina Adesola, has ordered a comprehensive investigation.
He added that the police will identify and arrest those responsible.
“No custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens,” Edafe said.
“The CP urges Deltans to remain calm. He also assures that officers will arrest and prosecute those behind this barbaric act.
“The command further calls on witnesses with useful information to come forward and assist the ongoing investigation.”
