The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to resume nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy from January 2, 2026.
The police linked the decision to rising security concerns. They said criminals now misuse unauthorised tinted vehicle glass more frequently.
The announcement came in a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin.
Police Clarify Legal Position
The Force said no court order currently prevents enforcement of the tinted glass law.
It explained that authorities earlier suspended enforcement to allow motorists time to regularise their documents. That pause also aimed to reduce public inconvenience.
Criminals Exploit Unauthorised Tinted Glass
According to the police, recent security assessments show a rise in crimes involving vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass.
Criminals often use such vehicles to hide their identities. They then carry out offences like armed robbery and kidnapping.
“These vehicles have been exploited by individuals and organised criminal groups,” the statement said.
Enforcement to Protect Lives and Property
The police said the decision to resume enforcement has become urgent.
They described the move as a proactive step to protect lives and property across the country.
“Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities,” the statement said.
“Consequently, enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy will resume on January 2, 2026.”
