Pope Mourns Victims of Attacks in Nigeria, Urges Authorities to Protect Lives

Robert Prevost, who serves as Pope Leo XIV, shared his grief over recent violent attacks in Nigeria. He posted his message on X, formerly known as Twitter, on February 8, 2026. The statement addressed assaults that claimed numerous lives in three states.

Pope’s Full Statement Highlights Concern

Pope wrote, “It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism.”

I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” he added. This plea urged officials to enhance security measures.

Attacks in Kwara State Claim Many Lives

Gunmen invaded Woro and Nuku villages in Kwara State on February 3, 2026. They killed at least 170 people, shot many at close range, and burned others alive. Additionally attackers razed homes and looted shops. Residents fled into nearby bushes for safety.

Violence Spreads to Katsina and Benue

Meanwhile suspected bandits struck Doma village in Katsina State’s Faskari Local Government Area on the same day. They killed 21 individuals and injured several others.

In Benue State, armed groups targeted Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area. Security forces repelled the invaders, but homes burned down, and reports indicated destruction without confirmed deaths.

Government Responds to Escalating Crisis

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who holds the position of Nigeria’s President, deployed an army battalion to Kwara State. He described the incident as a “beastly attack” and blamed Boko Haram militants. Furthermore AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Kwara State Governor, reported on X that attackers massacred 75 local Muslims, with the toll possibly rising to 170.

International Groups Condemn the Atrocities

Amnesty International condemned the assaults. The organization stated that gunmen abducted several people and called for accountability. These events heightened security concerns across Nigeria, prompting calls for stronger protection of citizens.
