The Rivers State House of Assembly has criticised Governor Siminalayi Fubara over remarks he made during a road commissioning ceremony. Moreover, the lawmakers said the governor’s comments were unnecessary and capable of igniting new tension across the state. The Rivers Assembly reaction adds a fresh layer to the ongoing political standoff.
Rivers Assembly Reaction: Lawmakers Say Fubara Lied
Briefing journalists on Thursday, Speaker Martin Amaewhule accused the governor of lying about not meeting with lawmakers. Governor Fubara had earlier dismissed reports of a rift and claimed arrangements were underway for a meeting with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and other Rivers leaders.
Amaewhule insisted the governor already met the lawmakers twice — first at Wike’s residence and later at Ferdinand Alabraba’s house. According to him, both meetings happened after President Bola Tinubu intervened during the emergency-rule negotiations.
Lawmakers Accuse Governor of Disparaging Wike
The lawmakers alleged that Governor Fubara continues to undermine the FCT Minister through his statements. Furthermore, they accused the governor of awarding contracts without the Assembly’s approval. They argued that such actions violate due process and weaken institutional accountability.
More Allegations Emerge in Rivers Assembly Reaction
Amaewhule added more claims against the governor. He said the outgoing Sole Administrator left N600 billion behind before exiting office. He also alleged that Fubara is attempting to buy over members of the Assembly. Consequently, he warned that such moves could destabilise the peace process initiated by the President.
Assembly Reaffirms Support for Peace
Despite the heated exchanges, Amaewhule said the Assembly remains committed to serving Rivers people. He explained that the lawmakers still support ongoing peace efforts and want stability restored. Therefore, they urged the governor to act with restraint and avoid comments that escalate the situation.
