School Attack: Senate Seeks 100,000 New Troops

school attack senate response troops recruitment

The latest school attack in Kebbi State has pushed the Senate to demand urgent action. Lawmakers want President Bola Tinubu to approve the immediate recruitment of 100,000 additional military personnel. They believe fresh manpower will strengthen the Armed Forces and boost the national fight against terrorism and banditry.

Call for Stronger Security Measures

Senator Abdullahi Yahaya led the motion, stressing that the recurring school attacks threaten children’s safety, especially girls. He warned that insecurity is crippling education and damaging community trust. Lawmakers argued that the military needs more boots on the ground to confront rising violence.

Senate Probes Safe School Initiative

Beyond the recruitment push, the Senate also created an ad hoc committee to review the Safe School Initiative. The committee will examine how funds have been spent and determine whether the programme has truly improved security in learning environments. Many senators questioned why attacks persist despite large financial investments.

Lawmakers Demand Accountability

The resolution shows the Senate’s plan to combine stronger security forces with stricter oversight. Improving troop numbers is only part of the solution; ensuring that every naira allocated to school safety is used properly remains equally important. Lawmakers insist this approach will protect students and rebuild confidence in the school system.
