Sean Astin, actor famous for his roles in The Lord of the Rings, Rudy, The Goonies, and Stranger Things, has been chosen as the new president of SAG-AFTRA. He won approximately 79% of the vote, defeating his opponent, Chuck Slavin. Michelle Hurd also won the role of Secretary-Treasurer. The union, which represents around 160,000 actors, media professionals, and performers, now turns a new chapter under his leadership.
Building on Past Leadership
Astin succeeds Fran Drescher, who led SAG-AFTRA through pivotal moments, including the 2023 strikes over streaming, television, theatrical contracts, and interactive media. Under Drescher, the union secured important wins such as bonuses linked to streaming viewership and protections related to artificial intelligence. Astin said he plans to build on those successes while addressing issues that many members believe still require further attention.
Key Priorities Ahead
Astin pledged to focus first on stronger protections against misuse of AI, especially how it affects performers’ likenesses and voices. He also emphasized streaming pay as a continued concern, saying that many actors feel underpaid despite the growth of streaming platforms. Another priority includes improving health benefits and ensuring members can access reliable insurance and care. He mentioned that too many members lost coverage or saw it reduced due to production gaps and contract changes. Astin also stressed the importance of keeping more productions in the U.S. to protect jobs locally and reduce outsourcing.
Experience and Legacy
Astin arrives with deep union experience. He served on multiple negotiating committees and on both national and local boards. His mother, Patty Duke, was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985 to 1988, so he follows in her footsteps as the first second-generation president of SAG-AFTRA. Union members pointed to his long record of participation in union affairs as proof that he understands the issues, from everyday contract terms to broader labor trends.
Challenges He’ll Face
Astin takes office at a moment of considerable challenge. The entertainment industry faces consolidation among studios, production companies expanding globally, and evolving pressures from technology, such as AI. This means negotiations become more complex because contracts must address not only traditional earnings but new issues like streaming residuals, AI compensation, and how to protect performers’ rights in digital content. Additionally, many members worry about rising healthcare costs, inconsistent work opportunities, and uneven contract enforcement.
Reaction and Response
Union members, industry professionals, and observers reacted positively to Astin’s election. Many praised his decisiveness, experience, and moderate approach. Former union president Fran Drescher publicly supported him and urged members to back him. Astin, for his part, thanked his family, union voters, and colleagues for their support. He said that the moment “feels like a moment to say thank you and get to work,” acknowledging both optimism and urgency.
