The Senate of Nigeria will screen the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as the new Minister of Defence on Wednesday. The move aims to strengthen the country’s security and address rising threats.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, APC, Ekiti Central, said the process is essential for ensuring internal peace and stability.
Musa nominated after Badaru resigns
Former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, resigned due to health reasons. Following this, President Bola Tinubu nominated General Musa to fill the position.
The President sent Musa’s nomination letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The letter will be read at plenary on Wednesday, formally starting the screening process.
Screening to boost national security
Bamidele emphasized that the Senate “cannot delay such a request, especially at this crucial time.” He said the screening follows Section 147 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
He added that the exercise shows collaboration between the Presidency and National Assembly. This partnership will support ongoing campaigns against bandits, terrorists, and other security threats.
“Since the president declared a State of emergency on national security, both the Presidency and National Assembly must work together to ensure peace, stability, and good governance,” Bamidele said.
The Senate’s prompt screening of General Musa signals decisive action to strengthen Nigeria’s security and maintain national stability.
