Sheikh Musa Lukuwa Leads Eid al-Fitr Prayers Defying Sultan Directive

Sokoto based Islamic scholar Sheikh Musa Lukuwa led his followers in observing Eid al Fitr prayers on Thursday. Consequently he defied the directive of the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Saad Abubakar who declared Friday as the official Sallah day. As reported by ALO360 the event drew large crowds to the scholar central mosque in Sokoto.

Scholar Announces Independent Moon Sighting

Sheikh Musa Lukuwa addressed his followers before the prayers began. Moreover he explained the basis for his decision.

“The moon sighting confirms Eid al Fitr on Thursday and we will not wait for Friday” Sheikh Musa Lukuwa stated.

In addition the scholar encouraged his congregation to celebrate in peace despite the disagreement.

Sultan Issues Official Date

The Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Saad Abubakar announced the national directive on Wednesday. As a result he called on all Muslims to observe prayers on Friday.

Furthermore the sultan emphasised the need for unity.

“After thorough consultations Friday is the agreed day for Eid al Fitr across Nigeria” Alhaji Saad Abubakar declared.

Event Sparks Mixed Reactions

The early prayers triggered varied responses across Sokoto. Therefore some residents supported Sheikh Musa Lukuwa stand while others backed the Sultan position.

Consequently the incident renewed public debate on moon sighting practices in Nigeria.
