A devastating fire razed parts of Singer Market in Kano on Saturday. The blaze started in the evening and continued into Sunday morning. It destroyed sections of Nigeria’s largest food market. This incident marked the second fire at the market within two weeks.
Federal Delegation Arrives
Kashim Shettima, the Vice President, led a federal government delegation to Kano on Monday. President Bola Tinubu directed the visit to express sympathy.
The team included Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives; Jibrin Barau, the Deputy Senate President; Sadiya Umar Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs; and Mustapha Habib Ahmed, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency. They inspected the site and met with affected traders.
Announcement of Support

Shettima announced a N5 billion donation from the federal government during the visit. He stated, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the sum of N5 billion to support traders affected by the Singer Market fire.”
Additionally APC governors pledged N3 billion, bringing total aid to N8 billion. Shettima explained that the funds aimed to help victims rebuild businesses and restore economic activity.
Impact on Victims
Junaid Zakari, the chairman of the market, reported that the fire destroyed property worth over N5 billion. Meanwhile over 1,000 businesses suffered losses, and seven people went missing. Zakari added that the disaster affected hundreds of traders who lost their livelihoods overnight.
Rebuilding Efforts
In conclusion the government committed to assist Kano State in reopening the market quickly. However, officials emphasized immediate relief for victims. The delegation conveyed condolences and assured ongoing support.
