Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, resigned as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State. He submitted his resignation letter on March 2, 2026, to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri through the secretary to the state government.

Governor’s Defection Sparked Changes
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress on Friday. He led 22 commissioners and other officials in the move during a statewide broadcast. Fintiri described the shift as a homecoming rather than a defection. However Adamu distanced himself from the group defection. He chose to resign instead of following the governor.
Parties Issued StatementsAdamu stated in his letter, “This decision followed deep personal reflection and careful consideration.” Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reacted to the governor’s defection.
He said, “Fintiri’s defection to APC is due to pressure and intimidation, not popularity.” Meanwhile the Peoples Democratic Party condemned the move. Party officials called Governor Fintiri a “coward.”
Political Implications UnfoldedThe resignation highlighted divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party in Adamawa. Analysts noted that the defection strengthened the All Progressives Congress, giving it control over 30 states. Following the events, party members demanded clarity on future alignments. The move also raised questions about loyalty in Nigerian politics.
Moreover, Governor Fintiri assured All Progressives Congress members that his entry aimed at unity, not to hijack structures.
