Meanwhile Brigadier Athlenda Mathe urged communities to report illegal bars. Additionally, police have shut down thousands of such venues recently to curb crime.

Increasing Violence in South Africa

South Africa experiences one of the highest rates of murder in the world- over 70 murders each day. There has been an increase in mass shootings at bars. An incident occurred in Soweto, killing 16 people in 2022.

Furthermore, illegal guns fuel much of the bloodshed despite strict laws. Consequently, experts call for stronger enforcement to protect vulnerable areas like townships.
