The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has blamed excessive speed and wrongful overtaking for the fatal road crash involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and two of his associates.
The Corps disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide.
Crash occurred on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway
According to the FRSC, the crash occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, Ogun State. The incident involved a Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua and a stationary commercial truck.
Preliminary reports showed that the crash happened at about 12:00 noon and was promptly reported to the Corps.
FRSC responders arrived swiftly
FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes of notification. Consequently, they carried out rescue operations, evacuated victims, controlled traffic, and prevented secondary crashes.
The Corps said the swift response helped limit further casualties.
Five persons involved
Ogungbemide said five adult males were involved in the crash. Sadly, two people died, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt.
He added that Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries and was rescued alive.
Cause linked to speeding and overtaking
According to the FRSC, preliminary findings showed that the Lexus Jeep travelled beyond the prescribed speed limit. During an overtaking manoeuvre, the driver reportedly lost control and crashed into the stationary truck.
The Corps stressed that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking remain leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.
Victims evacuated, police notified
FRSC said it evacuated Joshua for medical attention. Meanwhile, officials conveyed the bodies of the deceased to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu.
The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has also taken over further investigation and documentation.
FRSC issues safety warning
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery.
He urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and excessive speed, especially on high-speed corridors like the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, and to prioritise safety over haste.
