Super Eagles Beat Tanzania 2-1 as Ajayi, Lookman Shine

The Super Eagles began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign on a positive note with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday night in Fes, Morocco. Goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman ensured Nigeria claimed all three points in their opening Group C fixture.

Nigeria started brightly and dominated early possession. Despite recent disappointment in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Super Eagles pressed aggressively and created chances. Akor Adams came close inside ten minutes after striking the woodwork, while Victor Osimhen later saw a goal-bound effort cleared off the line.

Super Eagles Take Control Through Ajayi

The breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute. Semi Ajayi rose highest to meet an Alex Iwobi cross and headed powerfully past the Tanzanian goalkeeper. As a result, the Super Eagles went into the halftime break with a deserved 1-0 lead after controlling most of the first half.

Lookman Seals Super Eagles Victory

Tanzania responded after the restart and briefly drew level in the 50th minute through William M’Mombwa, who punished a moment of defensive slackness. However, Nigeria reacted quickly and restored their advantage almost immediately.

Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman found space at the edge of the penalty area and fired past Zuberi Masudi to put the Super Eagles back in front. Nigeria then managed the game effectively, even as Eric Chelle introduced Moses Simon to add attacking width.

Tanzania threatened late on, but Kelvin John failed to convert a clear chance in the closing minutes. The Super Eagles held firm to secure a crucial win and now turn attention to Saturday’s clash against Tunisia. Victory in that match will guarantee Nigeria a place in the round of 16.
