Thailand Vows to Keep Fighting Cambodia Despite Trump’s Ceasefire Call

Donald Trump announced a new ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia on December 12, 2025. He claimed both leaders agreed to halt fighting after phone calls with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Trump highlighted trade deals as leverage to end the clashes. However this move came amid renewed border violence.

Thailand’s Firm Stance

Thailand quickly rejected Trump’s claim. Prime Minister Charnvirakul stated that military operations would continue. He emphasized no agreement existed and accused Cambodia of provoking the conflict. As a result, Thai forces launched air strikes, showing their resolve to defend territory.

Ongoing Border Clashes

The fighting has been taking place along a 500-mile border, with root causes in long standing disputes concerning Preah Vihear temple, among others. The latest incidents, such as the November 2025 landmine explosion, broke a previous truce signed with US assistance.

Both sides started reporting deaths, displacing thousands of civilians in the process. Rocket fire continued into December 13th, 2025, with artillery bombardments.

International Reactions

Malaysia, as ASEAN’s president, called for restraint and a ceasefire, while Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim even contacted the two leaders to urge a peace solution. Meanwhile the international media also reported a discrepancy between the announcement made by Trump and the situation on the ground.

The Path Forward

Experts predict that a lack of real negotiation may see the conflict worsen. It is essential for both countries that they keep discussion on top priority to prevent potential instability. The current promise from Thailand indicates that there will be a stalemate, which is a setback to Trump’s success in his diplomatic victory, wrote John Hall.
