The State Department announced awareness of at least 20,000 Americans who returned to the United States from the Middle East since Saturday. The department’s task force helped 10,000 of those individuals. This update came during the joint U.S.-Israel operation against Iran.Furthermore, the department expanded its crisis intake form. The form previously covered the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. It now included Bahrain and Kuwait.

Details of American Returns

Officials noted that many Americans left on their own. The State Department provided assistance through information and transportation options. A senior official stated that the agency assisted nearly 6,500 Americans by providing critical information and helping with transportation.

In addition, the department urged Americans to depart from 14 countries in the region. They recommended using commercial transportation despite air travel disruptions. The countries included Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Expansion of Support Measures

The State Department established a 24/7 task force to handle requests. Marco Rubio, secretary of state, authorized this team. The task force worked to secure charter flights and other options.

Moreover, Rubio expressed confidence in assisting all Americans. “We are confident we’re going to be able to assist every American,” Rubio said.

Subsequently, the department anticipated additional flights and ground transports on Thursday. Tommy Pigott, department spokesman, confirmed the team worked continuously to find paths out of the conflict zone.

Criticisms of Trump Administration

The Trump administration faced criticism for lacking an advance evacuation plan. Lawmakers and stranded Americans voiced frustrations. Democrats accused the administration of unpreparedness before the operation began.

However, Donald Trump, president, explained the absence of a plan. “Well, because it happened all very quickly,” Trump told reporters. “I thought we were going to have a situation where we were going to be attacked.”

In response, Trump urged registration with the State Department. “If you are a US Citizen in the Middle East, and you want to come home, please register with the State Department at Step.State.Gov.,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
