Tijani promises AI-powered cameras to tackle insecurity in Jos

Bosun Tijani

Bosun Tijani, minister of communications, innovation and digital economy, has promised to deploy artificial intelligence-powered surveillance cameras to address insecurity in Jos, Plateau state.

Tijani made the pledge during an engagement with the Plateau state government, where he outlined plans to strengthen digital infrastructure and enhance security across the state.

He said the initiative would begin in Jos metropolis and expand to other parts of the state.

The minister noted that the project is aimed at preventing recurring violence and improving public safety through technology-driven solutions.

According to him, the deployment of AI-enabled cameras will support real-time monitoring and help security agencies respond more effectively to threats.

Tijani said his commitment to the project is personal, recalling his experience during the 2001 crisis in Jos.

“I was a student in Jos in 2001 when the crisis happened, and my family lost properties and friends,” he said.

He added that he arrived in the state with members of his technical team after holding discussions with the governor on implementing the initiative.

Tijani said similar technology-driven security systems are already in operation in Lagos and Enugu, where they have recorded positive outcomes.

Describing the persistent security challenges in Jos as troubling, the minister assured residents that the federal government would deploy available resources to support lasting peace.

“We will deepen the digital infrastructure and deploy a network of artificial intelligence-enabled cameras across the state, starting with Jos,” he said.
