Timipre Sylva Denies Alleged Coup Plot Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, has firmly denied any involvement in the alleged coup plot under investigation by Nigerian security agencies. Moreover, he described the rumors as politically motivated. These claims, he said, aim to damage his reputation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Details of the Abuja Residence Raid

According to Sylva’s statement, released by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Chief Julius Bokoru, his Abuja residence was recently raided. The individuals involved were believed to be operatives of the Defence Headquarters. The raid caused significant damage. However, Sylva and his wife were out of the country at the time. He was attending a medical check-up in the United Kingdom and was scheduled to travel to Malaysia for a professional conference. Therefore, he could not have been involved in any alleged plot.

Refuting the Allegations

Sylva rejected claims of involvement in any coup attempt. He described them as false, malicious, and politically orchestrated. In addition, Bokoru emphasized that Sylva had no role in planning or logistics. Although the Defence Headquarters already dismissed widespread coup rumors, the smear campaign continued.

Furthermore, Bokoru stated, “These rumors are the work of desperate politicians who see Sylva as an obstacle to their 2027 ambitions.” Thus, it is clear that political rivals are attempting to undermine Sylva’s credibility and influence in Nigerian politics.

Sylva’s Loyalty to APC and Democratic Values

The statement also highlighted Sylva’s loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Recently, he mobilized the Bayelsa APC structure to endorse President Tinubu for a second term unanimously. Moreover, Bokoru described Sylva as a dedicated democrat. From the Old Rivers State House of Assembly to his tenure as Governor of Bayelsa State, Sylva has consistently shown commitment to democratic institutions and processes.

Nigeria’s New Service Chiefs Confirmed

In another development, the Presidency expressed gratitude for the smooth Senate confirmation of new service chiefs. According to President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado, collaboration between the Executive and Legislature strengthens Nigeria’s security.

The newly appointed service chiefs include Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede (Chief of Defence Staff), Major Gen. Waidi Shaibu (Chief of Army Staff), AVM Sunday K. Aneke (Chief of Air Staff), and Rear Admiral Idi Abbas (Chief of Naval Staff). These appointments aim to improve synergy within the Armed Forces. In addition, they ensure the protection of Nigeria’s sovereignty. Meanwhile, the Presidency praised the Senate for its prompt confirmation process.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Chief Timipre Sylva’s denial of the alleged coup plot highlights his commitment to integrity and democratic principles. While political rivals continue smear campaigns, Sylva remains focused on supporting APC and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic processes. At the same time, the confirmation of new service chiefs reinforces the government’s efforts to maintain national security and stability. Therefore, these developments reflect a balance between political accountability and national protection in Nigeria.
