Tinubu: I Believe in Credible Opposition, But we Can’t Burn Freedom of Association

President Bola Tinubu has said his administration supports a credible opposition but will not violate citizens’ freedom of association.

Tinubu spoke on Friday night at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention in Abuja.

His remarks come amid growing concerns that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party state. The APC currently controls 31 of the 36 states, as opposition parties grapple with internal crises.

Opposition figures have also accused Tinubu and the ruling party of weakening rival parties and coercing politicians to defect.

However, the president rejected the claims.

He said democracy requires competition but must also respect constitutional rights.

“Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition, but we cannot burn the constitutional freedom of association,” he said.

Tinubu said he welcomes constructive criticism from opposition parties, adding that a strong opposition helps improve governance.

“As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition. One can challenge, question, and help refine policies. That is how governance improves,” he said.

He, however, criticised persistent attacks on the Electoral Act 2026.

Tinubu said the law followed due legislative process, including public hearings and broad consultations.

He noted that the national assembly passed the amendment with overwhelming support from elected representatives.

“The Electoral Act reflects our commitment to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule,” he said.

The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, credible elections, and national unity.

He said the government will continue to protect the integrity of the electoral process and strengthen democratic institutions.
