‘Tinubu is my friend, he deserves second term’ — Soludo

Charles Soludo

Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra state, says President Bola Tinubu deserves a second term in office.

Soludo made the remark during a media chat with journalists in Awka, the state capital.

He said his position reflects personal conviction and a consistent political stance.

“At a personal level, yes. There’s no question. I say it for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He’s my friend, and I believe he has done well and deserves a second term. No apologies about that,” he said.

However, the governor clarified that his position does not signal any plan to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said he remains a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), while maintaining a working relationship with the ruling party at the national level.

“It’s not about joining the APC. I am of APGA. But we have a working relationship. Progressives are working together,” he said.

APGA NOT IN OPPOSITION TO FG

Soludo explained that APGA does not operate in opposition to the federal government, despite being a separate political party.

“We are of a different party, but we are not in opposition. These are two different things,” he said.

He further likened the arrangement to coalition politics, where parties retain their identities but collaborate on shared goals.

“They still maintain their individual party identities, but they find common ground. Our common ground is progressivism,” he said.

In addition, the governor said APGA has adopted a policy of supporting the government at the centre.

“Our policy is to support the party and the government at the centre,” he said.

Furthermore, Soludo stressed that his support for Tinubu is not driven by personal political ambition. He noted that he had publicly stated his position before assuming office.

“It has nothing to do with my election. I wrote my position in November 2022, and it is in the public domain,” he said.

He added that he prioritises the interest of the people of Anambra state.

“It is about my people. They must have a stake at the table,” he said.

Soludo disclosed that APGA will not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 election.

“We are not going to field one. In 2011, APGA adopted then President Goodluck Jonathan. We will take a similar approach,” he said.

He urged the south-east to embrace alliance-based politics, arguing that such a strategy serves the region’s long-term interests.

“Our people are smart. Once they understand that it is in their enlightened self-interest, they will align,” he said.
