Tinubu Must Order Immediate Probe of Edo Attack on Obi, ADC Leaders

Nigeria must not normalise violence in its political space. The reported attack on Peter Obi and other opposition figures in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday is deeply troubling. It demands clear condemnation and urgent action.

BACKGROUND

Obi had attended a political event at the ADC secretariat in Edo state. He later proceeded to the residence of former Edo governor John Odigie-Oyegun for a meeting. Shortly after, armed attackers stormed the area. They fired bullets at the gate and damaged vehicles parked within the compound. Security operatives attached to Obi engaged them in a gun duel and repelled the assault.

This was not a random scuffle. It was a calculated act of intimidation. It could have ended in tragedy.

Nigeria has walked this road before. Political violence once stained our democracy with blood. Assassinations and attempted assassinations weakened public trust and shrank civic space. We cannot afford a return to that era.

THIS IS A DEMOCRACY

Violence against opposition leaders strikes at the heart of democracy. A healthy democracy depends on competition, dissent and alternative voices. It thrives when opposition figures can organise, travel and speak freely without fear. When attacks target political actors, the message is clear: stay silent or stay away. That is unacceptable.

The federal government must treat this incident with the seriousness it deserves. President Bola Tinubu should direct security agencies to conduct a swift, thorough and transparent investigation. The perpetrators must be identified and prosecuted. Anything less will embolden others.

The Edo state government also carries responsibility. Governor Monday Okpebholo had reportedly warned Obi to seek clearance before visiting the state, saying he could not guarantee his safety. That statement, whether intended as caution or politics, now sits uncomfortably beside Tuesday’s events. Leaders must protect all Nigerians within their territory, regardless of party affiliation. Security is not conditional on political loyalty.

Political rivalry must never translate into violence. Disagreements belong in debates, at the ballot box and in the courts. They do not belong at the gates of private residences under gunfire.

We therefore call on both federal and state authorities to act decisively. Investigate the attack. Publish the findings. Prosecute those responsible. Reassure Nigerians that political participation will not attract bullets.

Nigeria cannot afford to replace freedom with fear. Democracy flourishes where there is a vibrant and viable opposition. It withers where intimidation prevails.

This is a moment for leadership. Silence or delay will send the wrong signal. Justice, delivered swiftly and transparently, will send the right one.
