President Bola Tinubu has directed Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, to move to Kebbi State after gunmen abducted 24 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town at around 4 a.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Matawalle will coordinate security efforts and personally oversee the girls’ safe return.
Matawalle’s Experience in Crisis Management
During his tenure as Zamfara State governor (2019–2023), Matawalle handled mass kidnappings and bandit attacks. He coordinated the safe release of 279 female students abducted in Jangebe in February 2021. Therefore, officials expect his experience to play a vital role in resolving the Kebbi abduction quickly and efficiently.
Government Response and Security Measures
President Tinubu postponed trips to Johannesburg and Luanda to monitor the situation closely. Additionally, federal and state security agencies have increased patrols and intelligence operations in Kebbi. Authorities urge communities to report suspicious activity immediately to assist in the rescue mission.
Condemnation of Attacks on Civilians
The president condemned recent attacks on civilians and places of worship, including the assault on Christ Apostolic Church worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State. Furthermore, he stressed that any attack on children or innocent citizens remains unacceptable and will face the full response of government forces.
Coordination and Community Engagement
Matawalle will meet security officials, local leaders, and families of the abducted students upon his arrival in Birni-Kebbi. Moreover, he will lead tactical operations, coordinate intelligence efforts, and work closely with communities to expedite the girls’ release.
Strengthening School Safety
The abduction highlights persistent security challenges in Northern Nigeria. As a result, authorities continue to strengthen protection around schools and engage communities. President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to deploying every available resource so that security forces can return the abducted schoolgirls safely.
