President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sympathy with world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua following a fatal road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The crash claimed two lives and left the boxer injured.
Tinubu conveyed his message on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), describing the incident as a tragic loss that has cast a shadow over the season. He also prayed for the repose of the deceased and Joshua’s speedy recovery.
Tinubu offers condolences and prayers
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” the President said. He added that the tragedy had deeply affected the nation.
Furthermore, Tinubu said he shared in the grief of Joshua and his family as they process the emotional impact of the incident. According to him, the boxer’s courage and discipline remain admirable even in difficult moments.
President praises Joshua’s character
Tinubu described Joshua as a sportsman who has consistently shown love and dedication to Nigeria. He said those qualities have made the boxer a source of national pride.
Calling for unity, the President urged Nigerians to support one another in times of sorrow. He stressed the importance of collective compassion and shared destiny.
Details of the accident
Earlier reports said Joshua was involved in the accident on Monday at Makun, Ogun State, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The crash reportedly occurred shortly after 11am near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
Eyewitnesses said the Lexus SUV conveying the boxer collided with a stationary truck. Joshua reportedly sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died on the spot.
FRSC begins investigation
According to eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo, the convoy consisted of a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV, with Joshua seated behind the driver. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing. Authorities have yet to release a full official report.
