A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Adetokunbo Pearse, has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu and other political actors over the 2027 election, cautioning that any attempt to rig the poll could draw international consequences.
Pearse spoke during an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, where he said the global community is closely watching Nigeria’s democratic process. According to him, the era when election rigging went unchecked is coming to an end.
2027 election under intense international scrutiny
Pearse warned that powerful global actors would not ignore blatant electoral manipulation in Nigeria. He said international attention on the 2027 election would be far stronger than in previous polls.
“The whole international world is watching. If you rig the election the way you normally do, you may have Trump coming to get your war chambers. Everybody should be careful,” he said.
He added that political leaders must recognise the seriousness of global scrutiny and avoid actions that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic credibility.
ICC cited as warning against election malpractice
Furthermore, Pearse referenced international judicial institutions such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a deterrent to electoral misconduct. He said those involved in rigging elections could face consequences beyond Nigeria.
“This is not the first time it has happened. The International Criminal Court is there, so be careful what you do with a rigged election in Nigeria,” he warned.
According to him, the presence of international legal mechanisms should compel political actors to respect electoral laws and democratic principles.
Pearse says 2027 election will be different
Pearse expressed confidence that Nigerians would resist any attempt to rig the 2027 election. He said growing public awareness and international pressure would help ensure a more credible process.
“No, no, no — it will not happen again. 2027 is going to be different,” he said.
His comments come amid heightened political activities nationwide as parties prepare for the 2027 general elections. Meanwhile, opposition figures and civil society organisations continue to call for free, fair, and transparent polls across the country.
