The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may elect former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, as its next National Chairman following major developments at the ongoing elective convention in Ibadan.
Lado Steps Down, Clears Path for Turaki
A key contender for the position, Senator Yakubu Lado, formally announced his withdrawal from the race on Saturday. His decision surprised many delegates who believed Turaki was already running unopposed.
With Lado stepping down, delegates may now unanimously adopt Turaki as the party’s next national leader through their votes.
Lado, a former legislator representing Katsina South, also purchased a nomination form for the chairmanship contest. But during his address to delegates, he stated he was withdrawing in the interest of zoning arrangements within the PDP.
Arapaja to Become National Secretary
Former Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, is expected to emerge as the PDP National Secretary. His path appears clear following the withdrawal and restructuring of several other positions.
Over 3,000 Delegates at Ibadan Convention
More than 3,000 delegates from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory converged on the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, for the high-stakes convention.
The election proper began shortly after 7:10 p.m., following the announcement of voting procedures by Senator Ben Obi, who is overseeing the process.
Only One Fully Contested Position
Senator Obi also announced that the position of National Youth Leader has been stepped down and will not be contested during the convention.
At present, the Deputy National Organising Secretary is the only position with multiple contestants—three candidates in total. All other key offices appear set for smooth, uncontested confirmation.
States Already Voted
As at the time of reporting, delegates from six states—Abia, Zamfara, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, and Taraba—have already cast their votes. More states continue to join the process as the evening progresses.
Northern PDP Stakeholders’ Consensus
Turaki had earlier secured endorsement as the consensus candidate of Northern PDP stakeholders for the chairmanship seat ahead of the national convention. His strong backing from the region further strengthens expectations of his emergence.
Final Results Expected Soon
The official announcement of the winners is expected immediately after the conclusion of the voting process. Party members across the nation await the results that will shape the PDP leadership for the coming years.
