Turkey Condemns Deadly Kwara Attack, Assures Nigeria of Support

Gunmen attacked Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria, on February 3, 2026. The assailants arrived on motorcycles around 5 pm and surrounded the villages. They opened fire sporadically from different directions.

Residents who attempted to flee suffered gunshot wounds, while others who surrendered faced execution after being tied up.

Moreover the attackers abducted several people, including the wife, mother, and three children of the village head. The assault lasted until early morning and involved burning homes and looting shops. Umar Bio Salihu, chief of Woro village, recounted that the gunmen “just came in and started shooting” and killed two of his sons.

Casualties and Aftermath

The attack killed over 170 people, according to multiple reports. Amnesty International described February 3 as “Bloody Tuesday” due to coordinated assaults across states, including Kwara. Survivors fled into nearby bushland, and searches continued for more bodies.

Nigeria’s Response

Bola Tinubu, president of Nigeria, approved the immediate deployment of an army battalion to counter the threats. The Nigeria Police Force condemned the attack and ordered tactical and intelligence units to Kaiama.

International Condemnation

The United Nations Secretary-General strongly condemned the assault and called for perpetrators to face justice. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, chairperson of the African Union Commission, expressed deep shock over the loss of at least 162 lives.

Turkey’s Pledge

Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on February 5, 2026, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives caused by the terrorist attack that took place in Nigeria’s Kwara state. We strongly condemn this heinous attack and extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Nigeria. Türkiye will continue to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.”
