Umar Moriki Killed by Gunmen in Zamfara

Umar Moriki, a senior APC leader in Zamfara State, passed away on Saturday at the age of 62. The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours while he was returning to Kaduna from Gusau, the Zamfara state capital.

Political Engagement Before His Passing

On Friday, Moriki attended a meeting and a grand reception organized by the APC to honor Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, who was visiting the state.

Yusuf Gusau, APC spokesperson in Zamfara, expressed condolences to Moriki’s family in a statement released on Saturday.

“Late Umar Moriki attended the state’s APC stakeholders meeting as well as the grand reception in honor of the visiting Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, who was in the state to meet party members, associates, friends, and relations,” the statement read.

Career and Legacy

Moriki held several political positions throughout his life, including:

  • Vice-Chairman of Zurmi Local Government Area
  • Director-General of State Revenue Generation
  • Special Adviser on Rural Electrification

He also contested the Zurmi/Shinkafi House of Representatives seat during the 2023 elections. Moriki is survived by three wives and multiple children.

Funeral and Tributes

In response to the death, Minister Matawalle canceled all his engagements in Maradun to attend the funeral prayer. APC leaders, executives, members, and supporters traveled to Gusau to pay their respects to the fallen party chieftain.

The funeral marked the loss of a respected political figure who contributed significantly to party activities and state governance.
