The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has banned all unauthorized skitmaking and video production on its campus. This restriction covers hostels, classrooms, and other school facilities.
In a statement signed by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of Communication, UNILAG said it is concerned about the growing number of people filming without permission. The school explained that the rule aims to protect its academic environment and prevent misrepresentation in online videos.
Approval Required Before Filming
The university noted that it has a clear process for filming and recording within the campus. This procedure ensures safety, order, and respect for both academic and residential areas.
Anyone students, staff, or external creators must now seek official approval from the communications unit before recording any content. UNILAG said this rule will maintain discipline and uphold the school’s reputation.
Encouraging Responsible Creativity
While UNILAG encourages creativity and free expression, it urged all creators to follow its rules. The management advised students and the public to respect the directive in the interest of order and safety.
The school stressed that responsible content creation will help protect its image and maintain peace on campus.
UNILAG’s Impact on Nigeria’s Skit Industry
UNILAG has produced several of Nigeria’s most popular skitmakers. They include Muhammed Gilmore, who earned a degree in Chemistry in 2024, and Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie, known as Brain Jotter, who graduated last year.
The ban comes as Nigerian universities increasingly appear in social media videos used for comedy and commentary.
Conclusion
With this new policy, UNILAG wants to balance creativity with responsibility. By enforcing filming approvals, the university aims to maintain safety, order, and the integrity of its learning environment.
