US Company Withdraws Nigeria’s Presidential Aircraft from Saleca

Nigeria faces new uncertainty over its presidential fleet. A US marketing firm recently pulled the Boeing 737-700 Business Jet from sale. This decision ends months of efforts to offload the aircraft.

Background of the Jet

The Nigerian government bought the jet in 2005 for $43 million during President Olusegun Obasanjo‘s term. It serves as part of the Presidential Air Fleet with tail number 5N-FGT. The officials refurbished it at a Swiss facility in July 2024 by upgrading the seats and carrying out inspections.

Decision to Sell

In July 2025, the presidency under President Bola Tinubu announced the sale. The government intended to reduce costs and rationalize the fleet following a public outcry over expenditure.

The sale was announced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in July 2025, citing a need to reduce spending amid public concerns over money waste and to rationalize the fleet.

The jet’s market value stands at about $56 million, based on its condition. However the aircraft stayed unsold for months after listing on an international platform.

The Withdrawal

JetHQ, the US company handling the marketing, confirmed the removal. Manager Laurie Barringer stated in an email that they no longer list the Boeing. She directed inquiries to the Nigerian government for more details.

Meanwhile a media aide to the National Security Adviser promised a response but failed to deliver.

Implications

This step raises questions about the jet’s fate. Experts suggest the government might retain it or seek other buyers privately. As a result, Nigerians watch closely for updates on fleet management. Additionally the move highlights challenges in selling high-value assets quickly.
