Alwan Hassan, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Kano, has warned that the party risks losing a major electoral stronghold if it fails to secure the state in the 2027 general election.
Hassan spoke on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television.
His comments come a day after Rabiu Kwankwaso joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has reshaped political alignments ahead of 2027.
Hassan said Kano remains a critical battleground for the APC due to its large voting population.
“Kano is a big game for us. If we lose Kano to Kwankwaso, we’re in trouble,” he said.
He noted that the APC has struggled to maintain control of the state in previous elections.
“We lost it in 2019. We lost it again in 2023. And we may lose it in 2027,” he said.
Hassan described Kwankwaso as a dominant political figure in Kano with strong grassroots influence.
“Kwankwaso is a master of the game in Kano,” he said.
He also criticised the party’s handling of key political figures, saying the APC failed to consolidate its position ahead of the next election.
“We’ve lost a big opportunity. We’ve lost Kwankwaso. He has been in the market since 2023, and we abandoned him,” he said.
Hassan added that the party also lost a gubernatorial candidate who secured over 800,000 votes in Kano to the ADC.
He said the development poses a serious challenge to the APC’s chances in the state.
