The Shehu Mohammed faction of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has suspended its strike across 117 Federal Unity Colleges.
The union directed teachers and other affected workers to return to work immediately. The decision came after a meeting in Kano on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. Leaders from the Trade Union Congress (TUC), ASCSN and Unity Schools attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, the meeting focused on the King’s College, Lagos concession agreement. It also reviewed an earlier agreement between labour and the Federal Ministry of Education.
The Federal Government had already suspended the King’s College concession. As a result, a seven-member committee will now review the agreement. Two ASCSN representatives will serve on the committee.
Following the meeting, Unity School zonal coordinators backed the suspension of the strike. ASCSN later issued a formal notice directing workers to return to their schools. The notice, signed by Secretary-General Joshua Apebo on September 23, stated:
“In view of the above, the ongoing strike at the Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria is hereby suspended.”
However, the union stressed that the suspension is not permanent.
For now, schools can prepare to resume academic activities for the 2026/2027 session. The session was originally expected to begin on September 13. However, ASCSN warned that workers could resume the strike without further notice. That decision will depend on the committee’s findings and further directives.
Also, PTAs at Federal Government College, Warri and Federal Government Boys College, Apo have asked parents to bring students back on Sunday, September 27, from 10:00 a.m.
