A 12-year-old boy has died after the car he was travelling in was struck by a train at a level crossing in County Mayo, Ireland.
Gardaí and emergency services responded to the collision at Kiltybo near Ballyhaunis at about 20:45 local time on Thursday. The boy was a passenger in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a man in his late 40s, was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. All passengers travelling on the train were able to leave safely following the crash.
Forensic Collision Investigators will conduct a technical examination of the scene as part of the investigation. The road remains closed while the examination is carried out.
The Coroner has been notified of the boy’s death. His body has been taken to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be arranged.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or may have relevant information to come forward. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
