Entries Open for 12th Edition
The Nigeria Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund has officially opened entries for the 12th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition.
Organisers announced the call for applications on Wednesday during a launch event in Lagos.
The submission portal opened on June 4 and will close on August 7, 2026.
Meanwhile, organisers will announce the winner during the grand finale scheduled for October 30.
Winner to Receive Car and N10m
This year’s edition comes with an upgraded reward package.
According to the Sustainability Manager of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Oluseye Olokun, the overall winner will receive a brand-new Honda HR-V.
In addition, the winner will take home a cash prize of N10 million.
Furthermore, the winning teacher’s school will receive N30 million worth of infrastructure projects.
The package also includes a one-year supply of Maltina and international capacity-building training.
Runners-Up to Earn Cash Rewards
The organisers also retained rewards for other top performers.
The first runner-up will receive N5 million.
Similarly, the second runner-up will take home N3 million.
In addition, the best teacher from each state and the Federal Capital Territory will receive N1 million.
Competition Continues to Grow
Olokun expressed confidence that this year’s competition would attract more participants.
He noted that the 2025 edition recorded over 2,000 entries nationwide.
According to him, Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja submitted the highest number of applications.
He explained that the competition aims to celebrate excellence in teaching and inspire greater commitment among educators.
“This competition recognises and rewards outstanding teachers while promoting passion for the profession,” he said.
Olokun added that the initiative has received more than 11,700 entries since its launch.
Previous Winners Highlight Programme’s Impact
The 2025 edition crowned 32-year-old Yusuf Serah of Wisdom International School of Excellence, Abuja, as the national winner.
Over the years, several teachers have emerged as champions of the competition.
Notable winners include Mrs Rose Obi, Mr Imoh Essien, Mr Ariguzo Udochukwu and Mr Olasunkanmi Opeifa.
Others are Mrs Oluwabunmi Anani, Mr Abanike Taiye, Ms Adeola Adefemi and Mr Esomnofu Chidiebube.
Nigerian Breweries Expands Education Support
Speaking at the event, Corporate Affairs Director of Nigerian Breweries, Uzodinma Odenigbo, highlighted the programme’s achievements.
He revealed that more than 300 teachers have received recognition as state or national champions since 2015.
Moreover, the Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund has renovated or donated 430 classrooms and libraries across 80 communities.
According to him, the company remains committed to improving learning conditions nationwide.
“We will continue to provide quality school infrastructure and support educational development,” Odenigbo said.
Call for Improved School Security
Odenigbo also addressed the growing concern over attacks on schools.
Consequently, he urged governments and relevant stakeholders to strengthen security around educational institutions.
He stressed that teachers and students deserve a safe learning environment.
Furthermore, he called for the swift rescue of victims recently abducted in Oyo and Borno states.
Stakeholders Attend Launch Event
Several organisations attended the launch ceremony.
These included representatives of Honda Manufacturing Nigeria Limited, Air Peace Limited and Union Bank.
Officials from the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools also participated.
Together, the stakeholders reaffirmed their support for initiatives that promote excellence in education across Nigeria.
