Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate Seyi Makinde has explained why he is contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at the APM South-West town hall meeting in Akure, Ondo State, Makinde defended his decision to challenge an incumbent president from his home region.

He rejected claims that his candidacy divides the South-West, pointing to Nigeria’s 1999 presidential election as a proven precedent.

During that election, the region presented both Olusegun Obasanjo and Olu Falae as top presidential contenders.

“What the South-West did in 1999 was to present two of their finest for Nigeria to choose from,” Makinde stated.

“Is there anything wrong with offering citizens a choice this time around?” he asked.

Furthermore, the governor urged voters across the country to reject political deceit and evaluate leaders based on performance.

He criticized federal governance, citing wasteful administrative spending and poor budget implementation.

In addition, Makinde highlighted candidate energy and physical stamina as key requirements for solving national challenges.

“While I will not make age an issue, I will make energy a key priority,” Makinde noted.

He challenged opposing presidential candidates to demonstrate their fitness during public campaign events.

Meanwhile, political analysts continue to monitor shifting party alignments across the South-West ahead of the 2027 general election.

Finally, Makinde called on party supporters to build a strong grassroots coalition across all six South-West states.
