Daniel Woyengikuro, the National Financial Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated that the party may grant former President Goodluck Jonathan an automatic nomination to run in the 2027 presidential election.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly contemplating offering former President Goodluck Jonathan a direct ticket to contest the 2027 presidential election, should he decide to return to the party and take on a more active political role. This information was disclosed by Daniel Woyengikuro, the PDP’s National Financial Secretary, during an exclusive interview held in Abuja. Woyengikuro highlighted Jonathan’s ongoing influence not only within the party but also across the wider political landscape of Nigeria, referring to him as the national leader of the PDP. He stated, “Is he not the best candidate for us at this moment? He is not just a former president; he is the leader of the party now. Aside from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the next person in line is him. Goodluck Jonathan is the national leader of this party.”
According to Woyengikuro, the PDP has been actively engaging in discussions with Jonathan and his close associates, with the goal of reintegrating him into the core leadership structure of the party. This move is part of a broader strategy aimed at repositioning the PDP and addressing the increasing political and economic challenges facing Nigeria today. He emphasized the critical need for strong leadership during these turbulent times, saying, “Nigeria has reached a point where we need to salvage this country — for our generation and for those to come.” He also mentioned that when conversations about a Southern Presidency arise, Jonathan’s name naturally comes to the forefront as a leading figure.
When specifically asked whether the PDP would consider granting Jonathan an automatic nomination to represent the party in the 2027 presidential election, Woyengikuro was unequivocal in his response. “For me, that’s what I firmly stand for. You can quote me anywhere — I want him to come. An automatic ticket for him, as it stands now. Because we must salvage both this party and the nation,” he declared. He went further to assert that the return of Goodluck Jonathan to active politics would have a profound impact on reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape in the lead-up to the next general elections.
In addition to his support for Jonathan, Woyengikuro praised Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, describing him as a “vibrant leader” and a formidable candidate from the South who has the potential to bridge the generational divide within Nigerian politics. “These are the two main individuals I stand for: Goodluck Jonathan and Seyi Makinde,” he concluded. As the 2027 elections approach, the PDP is expected to intensify its internal consultations and strategic planning to position itself strongly for the upcoming political contest.
