Kano State Govt Shuts Down Entertainment Centres for Ramadan

The Kano State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all entertainment centres across the state as Ramadan approaches.

The announcement came from Abdullahi Sulaiman, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Censorship Board. The directive targets entertainment venues, commonly known as gala houses, and Disc Jockey (DJ) operators under the board’s regulation.

“Starting Wednesday, February 18, 2026, all such venues must close by 10:00 p.m. And remain shut until the end of Ramadan,” the statement read.

The board explained that the move is meant to create a peaceful and morally appropriate environment. For Muslims to observe the fasting period without distractions.

“This action ensures a calm atmosphere for residents to observe Ramadan in line with religious practices,” Sulaiman said.

He added that all entertainment activities under the board’s supervision would stay suspended throughout Ramadan. A reopening date, especially for Eid celebrations, will be announced later.

The board also urged affected venue owners and DJs to comply with the directive. Warning that enforcement teams would monitor adherence. “Any violation of this order will result in appropriate penalties,” Sulaiman cautioned.

The agency clarified that the decision aligns with its role to regulate entertainment. And uphold moral and social order during religious periods.

Addressing public concerns, the board emphasized that the directive does not apply to event centres used for weddings, conferences, or political gatherings.

Usman Dankwano, one of the board’s directors, explained that only venues classified as entertainment outlets. Such as gala houses and similar recreational spots, are affected.

“Places purely for entertainment, like gala houses, fall under the Censorship Board’s jurisdiction. Event centres, however, are not included in this directive,” Dankwano clarified.
