President Bola Tinubu has charged the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, to restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
Tinubu gave the directive on Wednesday during Disu’s decoration ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
On Tuesday, the president accepted the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. He subsequently announced Disu as his replacement.
‘A Solemn Charge to Serve’
Addressing the new police chief, Tinubu described the appointment as a significant responsibility.
“Your decoration today is not simply a commandment of rank, but a solemn charge to serve Nigeria with courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the constitution,” he said.
Tinubu said he appointed Disu based on his track record and performance.
“I took this decision for you to assume this responsibility because I know your record,” the president said.
He recalled Disu’s service in Lagos when he served as governor of the state, noting his dedication and professionalism.
Strengthen Discipline, Build Trust
The president said Disu assumes office at a critical time for national security.
He urged him to strengthen discipline within the force and enhance inter-agency collaboration.
“I expect you to strengthen the discipline, enhance interagency collaboration, and restore public confidence in the Nigerian police,” Tinubu said.
He also asked the new IGP to lead firmly but fairly and demand professionalism at every level.
“Ensure that safety of lives and property remains our highest priority,” he added.
‘You Have My Full Support’
Tinubu acknowledged the scale of the task ahead but expressed confidence in Disu’s ability to deliver.
“It’s a daunting challenge, I know you can do it. You have my full support as you advance the security pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
He described Disu as disciplined, straightforward and respected.
“The commitment Nigeria needs from you is to make it better than you met it,” the president said.
Nigeria Faces Security Challenges
Tinubu noted that Nigeria continues to grapple with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities.
He said Disu had been part of security reforms and innovations within the system.
“The challenge as you hold the position of this leadership is the belief that you will exert and Nigeria will prevail,” Tinubu said.
Disu now takes charge of the police at a time of heightened security concerns across the country.
