President Bola Tinubu decorated Tunji Disu as acting Inspector-General of Police on February 25, 2026. The ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and drew senior government officials.
Appointment Follows Leadership Change
Tunji Disu assumed the role after Kayode Egbetokun resigned from the position. Egbetokun cited family issues as the reason for his departure, though reports indicated that authorities had requested his resignation.
Disu Declares War on Impunity
Tunji Disu addressed the gathering during the ceremony. He announced a decisive break from past practices within the force. “I will let them know that the era of impunity is over,” he stated. He also pledged strict accountability for misconduct. “I will ensure that they know that I will try to follow a regime of zero tolerance to corruption,” he added.
Human Rights and Training Take Center Stage
Tunji Disu outlined his commitment to officer development. He emphasized the importance of respecting citizens’ rights during policing operations. “I will ensure that I train them and encourage them to follow human rights,” he explained. Furthermore, he planned to deliver addresses to officers across the country to reinforce these standards.
Public Cooperation Stressed
Tunji Disu highlighted the essential role of community partnership in effective policing. He noted that police success depended on public support. “Most importantly, I’m going to drum it into them that we can never succeed without the cooperation of members of the public,” he said. Additionally, he reminded officers that citizens remained their true employers.
Welfare and Security Challenges Addressed
Tunji Disu committed to improving conditions for police personnel. He linked officer welfare directly to performance outcomes. “I’m going to ensure that I take their welfare into consideration, because people who are motivated put in their best,” he remarked.
He also expressed confidence in the ability of officers to confront pressing security threats, including banditry and insurgency.
