American citizen Aimee Betro has been convicted for attempting to fatally shoot a man in the United Kingdom. However, investigations into the background of the Wisconsin-born woman revealed that she led an otherwise ordinary life, with investigators describing her as “fairly unremarkable” and noting that she had little to no prior criminal history. The reasons behind her sudden involvement in what appeared to be a contract killing remain a mystery, with no clear motive having been established.
A Wisconsin woman who attempted to carry out a murder while disguised in a niqab has been found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder. The individual, 45-year-old Aimee Betro from West Allis, Wisconsin, travelled from the United States to the United Kingdom in 2019 as part of a premeditated plan to attack a businessman residing in Birmingham and his family.
Aimee Betro Convicted of crime
Following a complex and drawn-out trial, a jury spent nearly 21 hours deliberating before reaching a guilty verdict. Aimee Betro faced multiple charges, including possession of a self-loading firearm with the intent to cause fear or intimidation and the illegal importation of ammunition into the UK. The attempted assassination was coordinated by two British nationals, Mohammed Aslam, aged 56, and his 31-year-old son, Mohammed Nabil Nazir. Both men were sentenced in 2024 for their roles in orchestrating and supporting the failed murder attempt.

The court at Birmingham Crown Court was previously told that Aimee Betro made an attempt on the life of businessman Sikander Ali on the evening of September 7, 2019. She approached Mr. Ali outside his home on Measham Grove, located in Yardley, Birmingham, and attempted to shoot him at close range. Remarkably, he survived the attack without injury. Just a few hours later, in the early morning of September 8, Aimee Betro returned to the property and fired three additional gunshots into the house. Fortunately, the property was unoccupied at the time of the second incident. Following this, Betro promptly left the United Kingdom and flew back to the United States the next day.
Judge presiding over this case
Judge Drew, who presided over the case, has postponed sentencing until August 21. Addressing the court, he remarked, “I imagine Miss Betro is eager to know what her sentence will be, and waiting in uncertainty is undoubtedly a difficult experience.”
As she was taken into custody and escorted from the courtroom, Betro remained expressionless and showed no visible emotional reaction.
Speaking on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service for the West Midlands, prosecutor Hannah Sidaway commented on the extraordinary efforts made to bring Betro to justice. She stated, “This conviction is the result of years of relentless investigation and determination. Law enforcement officials worked tirelessly across national and international jurisdictions to track Betro down, despite her persistent attempts to evade capture and prosecution.”
Sidaway emphasized the seriousness of the offense, saying, “Aimee Betro attempted to murder a man in cold blood, in a public street, at point-blank range. It is nothing short of a miracle that he escaped unharmed.”
She also highlighted the breadth of evidence presented during the trial, which included surveillance footage from the crime scene, digital forensic analysis, mobile phone records, and key findings obtained through collaboration with international law enforcement and judicial agencies.
Concluding her remarks, Sidaway noted that the true motivations behind Aimee Betro’s involvement in the plot remain unclear. “Only Aimee Betro truly knows what drove her to take part in such a violent and senseless act—travelling thousands of miles from her home in Wisconsin to carry out a shooting against someone she had never met.”
